The Reality of Template Web Design

Realliy of using website templates and site builders

So you need a website and you start searching for someone to build it. You find a few local companies, some large, some small. You get a few proposals and begin to realize it is beyond your budget. In your search you also come across some companies that advertise free websites or cheap web design templates and you think it seems like the route to take. It says anyone can set it up and no programming skills are required. So you sign up or purchase a template and before you know it you’ve spent hours, weeks or even months working on this simple informational site that said it could be set up and live that very same day.

We know what your thinking, this is where we start bashing the site builders and pre-built templates and pitch you on doing the custom (more expensive) option.. but luckily you’re wrong…sort of. Website templates like the ones available on themeforest.com or the wordpress themes on woothemes.com can be very helpful. They offer some of the latest trends in design and functionality with easily customizable features, if you have the experience. In most cases we absolutely recommend a custom website. It is unique to your company and tailored to your exact specifications. For some this really is not an option based on initial funds.

Perhaps you have some experience, you took an HTML class and have a family member or friend who is in school for website design/development and decide that’s the way to go. Again, this path usually ends up costing you hours, weeks or months. Just because someone knows what HTML and CSS look like does not mean they fully understand how to build a functional website, especially if it needs to be customized. It’s similar to knowing what a car engine looks like and how it functions, but most of us wouldn’t attempt to build or fix one ourselves. This doesn’t mean I wouldn’t want a brand new custom engine, but I would trust an expert to handle the task since my car is an important part of my daily life.

Applying this same theory to your website build is helpful, especially if it is for your own business. Your website is your ultimate marketing tool and it works for you 24/7. So before attempting to create a website on your own, consider how much your time is worth and you may just discover that doing it yourself is actually more expensive.
